Super Mario Bros. Wonder é um dos indicados à categoria máxima da The Game Awards, o famoso Game of the Year (ou GotY), e também concorre a outras 4 categorias da premiação.
Durante a cerimônia, que acontecerá no dia 7 de dezembro de 2023, Super Mario Bros. Wonder disputará a taça de jogo do ano ao lado de títulos de peso como Baldur's Gate 3, da Larian Studios, e Marvel's Spider-Man 2, da Insomniac Games/SIE. É interessante notar que Mario não será o único first-party da Nintendo a concorrer como Game of the Year, visto que The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom também está entre os indicados que lhe fazem companhia.
Um platformer 2D multicolorido e focado primordialmente na gameplay fomentada pela inovadora mecânica das flores fenomenais, Super Mario Bros. Wonder difere de muitos títulos que costumam pipocar entre os indicados para jogo do ano. O game também concorre às categorias de melhor direção de jogo, melhor direção de arte, melhor jogo família e melhor multiplayer. Super Mario Bros. O Filme, o megassucesso da Illumination em parceria com a Nintendo, também concorre à categoria de melhor adaptação de videogame — uma das indicações mais adequadas, visto que o longa-metragem é atualmente a segunda maior bilheteria arrecadada por um filme de animação de todos os tempos.
